Telemedicine Information Exchange

As the Web Developer for the Telemedicine Research Center I assumed the lead in redesigning Telemedicine Information Exchange (TIE). The goals for this redesign were to make the site easier to user and to showcase the features that were identified as being valuable to our users.

To accomplish these goals I undertook revisions on two levels. One level addressed information architecture. I reorganized the structure of the site's content was to push the most important items to the top of the hierarchy and the front of the site. Search features, hot topics and article lists, which had been buried at least two or clicks into the site, were made accessible with one click. News headlines were added to the home page. I created a repositories for full text articles, submission forms, and user services and made them all accessible from the navigation menu.

The other level addressed design. I transformed the graphical interface to better account for file size, readability, and usability. I created a new logo that was both simpler and more distinct. I created consistent and scannable layouts for like data. I created print pages for databases records and full text articles. I implemented CSS / XHTML templates and global and local navigation systems.

I've been using dynamic database driven technologies to deliver content to the site for the last six years. With this redesign I added XML to our development environment. All of full text articles are marked up in XML, using the Simple Doc Book DTD, and delivered to the site using XSLT and XML.DOM. Not only does this mean I mark-up an article once and then call it up in multiple pages throughout site, but this also means I can export the data to other applications that can parse XML.
